UF OFFICE OF SUSTAINABILITY
From the spring of my sophomore year to the end of my senior year, I served as an Outreach and Communications intern for the UF Office of Sustainability.
In this role, I managed all social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok), provided live coverage of events on our social media, and produced content (graphics, articles, blogs, etc.). I was able to increase engagement on our Facebook account by 75% in the last two years.
Getting to work with this team was an awesome experience and solidified my passion for the environment and social equity. Our efforts helped educate the Gainesville community on the importance of living a greener lifestyle, and brought about tangible change to UF's campus.

EARTH DAY: IT ALL BEGAN WITH COLLEGE STUDENTS
Earth Day is just around the corner, and this year marks the 50th anniversary of its inception.
Looking back on Earth Day celebrations of the early 70s tells us that it was primarily college students to drive the agenda and eventual adoption of sustainable legislature by the government.
“One thing about students is there’s a lot of energy and, I’m not saying this in any derogatory manner, there’s a lot of idealism as well,” said Will Callaway, the National Campaign Director for Earth Day Network, an international mission-driven organization around environmental campaigns.

UF MARCHING BAND SAVES PAPER, MONEY WITH NEW MOBILE APP
This Saturday at the Florida vs. Georgia football game, all 365 members of the UF marching band will be marching to the beats of “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and other hits from the band Queen that they learned and rehearsed with a new mobile app for practicing drills.
The Pride of the Sunshine is now using the Ultimate Drill Book app (UDBapp) to learn and rehearse marching drills, eliminating the need to print drills on paper.

SUSTAINABLE COMMUTER SPOTLIGHT: MATTHEW FUENTES
When fourth-year sociology major Matthew Fuentes first started at UF, he quickly realized that he needed a better way of getting around other than just walking. He considered getting a scooter or a bicycle, but the bike could be difficult to store and he didn’t want to have to keep fueling up a scooter.
As an alternative, Fuentes looked into Boosted Boards: electric skateboards that have recently grown in popularity as a quick way to get around campus. The downside? A hefty price tag, with Boosted Boards’ most economical model, the Boosted Mini S, retailing online for $749.
